House Democrats and Speaker Egolf Put Jobs as Top Priority
House Democrats Ready to Turn Their Focus to Creating Jobs and Economic Opportunity for Hardworking New Mexicans
Santa Fe, NM – This morning, House Democrats declared they’re ready to get to work on their top priority for this legislative session; jobs. Prior to the start of the session, Speaker Brian Egolf (D-Santa Fe) and other Representatives traveled around the state to meet with local business leaders. In these intimate and frank meetings, business owners were asked how legislators can help them create jobs in their industry and what infrastructure improvements would help them expand their business. Our legislation initiatives are taken directly from the great ideas that grew out of these meetings.
“We are laser focused on building our economy,” Speaker Egolf told reporters today. “We face enormous challenges ahead. But the table is set to open a new page on the future, one that expresses our values as Democrats and New Mexicans and that focuses on jobs and economic development. We are ready to get to work.”
Among the areas of legislation that are part of the House Democrats’ jobs effort are broadband expansion, job training, expanding the solar industry, and introducing new industries, such as industrial hemp. Speaker Egolf specifically addressed economic development funds and the need to improve access to them for local businesses.
“The big name LEDA home runs are great,” said Speaker Egolf. “But we could also use plenty of base hits and ground rule doubles.”
