House Rules Committee Passes Resolution for Increased Transparency
New Rule Would Make Amendments to Bills Easier to Access & Read
Santa Fe, NM – Today, the House Rules and Order of Business Committee unanimously passed a resolution that would make committee amendments to bills available online and incorporated into the original bill text. House Resolution 3, sponsored by Representative Nate Gentry (R-Albuquerque), states that upon adoption of a committee report recommending an amendment to a bill, memorial, or resolution, the chief clerk will post on the legislative website a document with the amendment incorporated into the text. The document will make clear which text is original and which is language added or struck by the amendment.
“Things can move very fast here at the legislative session and it is often hard for members of the public to keep track of changes to bills,” said Speaker of the House Brian Egolf (D-Santa Fe). “This change will make it easier for both the press and the public to track legislation as it moves to the Governor’s desk and, therefore, make our democracy more transparent and participatory.”
House Resolution 3 next moves to the House Judiciary Committee.
