Proposal to Name State Highway 50 for Representative Lucky Varela Moves Forward
Santa Fe – Today, a memorial to name State Highway 50 after former Representative Luciano “Lucky” Varela passed the House Transportation, Public Works and Capital Improvements Committee. The memorial was introduced by the Speaker of the House Brian Egolf (D-Santa Fe) and Representative Patricia Lundstrom (D-Gallup).
“I am proud to honor Representative Lucky Varela for his service, and to commemorate his legacy of championing working families. From the state’s finances to our public education system, Representative Varela will be remembered for his fiscal expertise and his love for our beautiful state,” said Speaker of the House Brian Egolf.
“Representative Lucky Varela was born and raised in Pecos, New Mexico, so it’s only fitting that we recognize his decades of public service near his birthplace,” said Rep. Patricia Lundstrom. “This memorial will be a wonderful reminder to all of us to strive to be as knowledgeable and dedicated as Lucky was.”
Following a career in state government, Rep. Varela was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1986 to serve House District 48 and represented that district until 2016. He served as the deputy chair of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee and was a member of the Health, Government and Indian Affairs Committee. The memorial is also sponsored by Reps. Debbie A. Rodella (D-Espanola) and Carl Trujillo (D-Santa Fe).
