Rep. Ely’s Memorial to Create Economic Stability for New Mexico Families Passes House
Santa Fe, N.M. – Today Rep. Daymon Ely‘s memorial that seeks to create more economic stability for New Mexico families passed the New Mexico House. House Memorial 4 would convene a parental paid-leave working group to develop recommendations for establishing a parental paid-leave and paid family-and medical-leave program for New Mexico.
“No one should have to choose between putting food on the table and caring for a sick child. This measure will move toward creating economic stability for families while ensuring a productive workforce,” said Rep. Ely.
The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not guarantee workers paid time off to provide care to a new child, and one of only a handful of these nations that does not provide paid leave for other types of family care.
HM 4 continues a working group created in 2015, and requires recommendations to be reported to the Legislative Health and Human Services Committee by December 31, 2018.
